Types of Wood
Solid Beech
Characteristics: The heartwood is whitish or grayish without any great difference in its sapwood or pith. Fine pores evenly distributed. Tables are available untreated, soap or oil treated, and lacquered.

Solid Oak
Characteristics: The sapwood in oak is narrow (1-3 cm) and is unusable. The pith is grayish white and the pores appear in discernable rings with sharp edges. Tables are available untreated, or soap or oil treated. Oak treated with oil gets somewhat darker over time.

Solid Cherry
Characteristics: Reddish brown pith, often containing an attractive wavy texture. Knots and gum do occur. Tables are available oil treated or lacquered.

We recommend that you always treat wood with soap or oil to prevent the wood from drying out. If the wood does dry out, it can crack.

Lacquered wood requires no care. Simply wipe it dry with a damp cloth.

Care for soap or oil treated wood according to the instructions on the following pages.

Solid Walnut
The sapwood of walnut ranges from a whitish or greyish to a greyish-red hue. The core is greyish-brown with widespread pores. We use the wood from the sapwood as well as from the core. Because walnut is not grown commercially, very little of it is available. It grows typically in hedgerows, windbreaks and gardens. All our walnut is oil treated.

Good advice for tables made of solid wood:
  • Always wipe and treat your table along the grain.
  • Never use steel wool.
  • The wood must never get wet, only damp.
  • Never subject the table to drastic changes in temperature.
  • Avoid using dish mats made of cork. Heat and moisture can penetrate into the table.
  • Be very wary of placing hot things such as tea mugs on a damp tablecloth; discoloration can result.
  • Be very wary about placing solid wood furniture too close to wood stoves or radiators. Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Solid tabletops should never be covered with wax tablecloths or similar airtight material for long periods.
